Charger plates are one of my favorite tools when I’m styling a table.
They’re simple, stylish, and oh-so-versatile.
But I know they can be a little confusing, especially if you’re new to creating tablescapes.

What Is a Charger Plate?

A charger plate is a large decorative plate that sits beneath your dinner plate.
It typically measures around 14 inches in diameter and is not meant to hold food directly.
Instead, it acts as the foundation of a place setting, anchoring the entire look and adding visual interest.
Some charger plates are ornate and elegant, while others are more minimal or rustic. There are endless styles, colors, and materials to choose from.
But here’s the key thing to remember: charger plates are 100% decorative.
They’re not for eating off of.
Now, I’ve seen a lot of confusion out there.
Some stores even label round placemats as chargers.
But let me be clear ~ those are not charger plates.
True chargers are rigid and plate-like. If it bends or feels like fabric, it’s a placemat, not a charger.
A Little History
Charger plates have been around for quite some time.
They first started showing up on formal dining tables in the 1800s and have made a lovely comeback in recent decades.
While they were once a staple at fancy dinners. Nowadays, I see them used in both formal and casual settings.
I love that!
How to Use a Charger Plate
One of the most common questions I get is: how do I use a charger plate?
Great question! Here’s what you need to know:
- Placement: Your charger plate should sit about one inch from the edge of the table and be centered with the chair. It’s the very first layer of your place setting.
- Timing: Charger plates go on the table before guests arrive. They help designate each person’s spot and create a polished look from the get-go.
- During the Meal: There are two schools of thought here:
- You can remove the charger plate before the main course is served.
- Or, you can place the dinner plate right on top of the charger and remove both together after the entree.
Whichever route you choose, just remember: if you’re one to follow etiquette, the charger plate should always be cleared before dessert is served.
And again ~ don’t serve food directly on a charger. Some even say “not for food use” on the bottom.
They’re strictly for show.
Variety of Charger Plates
Let me share a few of my favorite charger plates to show you the variety that’s out there:
- Simple silver: Classic and understated. These are so easy to dress up or down.
- White scalloped edge: Adds a soft, feminine detail to any place setting.
- Rustic green with brown edging: Perfect for a farmhouse or beachy vibe.
- Purple petal-shaped: Great for floral or whimsical tablescapes.
- Deep red: Ideal for holidays like Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
- Faux leather: Masculine, modern, or even rustic, depending on how you style them.
- Black wood-look with scallops: Adds a little drama and contrast.
- Gold with beaded edge: Timeless and elegant. I use them all the time!
Dressing Up (or Down) Your Place Setting
A gold charger plate is a great place to start if you’re just beginning your collection. Here are a few ways I use mine:
- With fine china: I often pair it with my Nana’s china for family gatherings. It makes the setting feel special and layered.
- With patterned plates: Even a simple floral plate pops more when it’s sitting on a charger.
- With everyday dishes: A white plate alone can feel plain, but put it on a gold charger? Instant elegance.
One little styling trick I love: tuck a napkin between the charger and dinner plate. It adds a nice touch, especially when the napkin brings in color or texture from the rest of the table.
Just keep in mind that guests will need to lift the plate to get to the napkin.
Getting Started Without Breaking the Bank
You don’t need to spend a lot to start building your charger plate collection.
I find most of mine at thrift stores, estate sales, and yes ~ dollar stores. For just $1.25 each, you can grab a full set without stressing over the price.
If you’re only going to get one set to start, I recommend either gold or silver. They tend to pair well with most dishes and can be used all year long.
Bonus Use: Chargers as Centerpieces
Did you know charger plates also work beautifully in the center of your table?
You can place one in the middle and top it with candles, a small floral arrangement, or seasonal decor. It helps ground your centerpiece and ties the whole tablescape together.
