I had planned to make a Super Bowl trophy for my Super Bowl party buffet table. I thought it would be a great decor piece.
It was gonna be an easy and cheap diy project. I have seen it online and all I needed was a vase and a foam football from Dollar Tree. Plus silver spray paint and glue.

What could be cheaper and easier? Right!
Wrong!!
This (should-be) easy Super Bowl trophy was an epic fail.
I should have known when I went to Dollar Tree and they didn’t have any foam footballs. Even online they were completely sold out.
But I decided to go to a local thrift store and found a bag with a few small footballs, and figured they would work well instead.
Nope.
The concept is simple: buy a cheap football and a cheap vase that has a similar shape to the base of the Super Bowl trophy. Spray paint them both silver and then glue at an angle the now silver football onto the top of the vase.
I’m not sure why mine didn’t work out, but it didn’t. The spray paint on the footballs never dried.
Seriously! Days later they’re still a tacky mess.
I touch them and my fingers turn silver. That shouldn’t happen. My silver paint was a primer+paint that I have used successfully on other projects. The footballs were synthetic materials.

The paint should stick and dry.
But that wasn’t the end of this diy fail. One of the footballs started losing air. There was no salvaging it.

So you know what I did ~ I threw my hands up in the air and said “for-get-it!”
This diy project had beat me.
I wasn’t going to try and find more cheap footballs, new vases, and new spray paint.
Sometimes you’ve just gotta give up and move on. It wasn’t worth my time and money to try and get it right.
But you know what ~ I did use my epic fail diy Super Bowl trophies on my Super Bowl buffet table.
They don’t look that great and they better not fall, or my tablecloth will have silver paint on it. And definitely don’t touch them! But they do provide a hint of what I was going for on my buffet.
And you know what – sometimes diy projects turn out fantastic and sometimes they are an epic fail. And that’s okay.
