You know I love a good design challenge ~ I wanted to style a Mother’s Day table ~ and this Mother’s Day tablescape was extra fun!
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I wanted to do something special that would feel both creative and doable.
So I challenged myself to style two completely different Mother’s Day table settings ~ but using the exact same core pieces for the place settings.
The twist?
One table leans into a sleek mid-century modern table setting, and the other brings in romantic old world charm.
Totally different styles, but using the same foundation pieces.
Let’s dive into both looks—and don’t forget to tell me at the end which one’s your favorite (or better yet, which one your mom would love most!).

How to Style 2 Stunning Mother’s Day Table Settings
The Shared Elements = One Foundation
Before I started styling, I picked a few key pieces to use on both of my Mother’s Day tablescape ideas:
- A white linen tablecloth
- Rattan chargers
- White dinner plates
- Gold flatware
- Teal cloth napkins
These elements provide a neutral, yet rich base to build on, and they worked beautifully across both styles.
Before I even thought about the styles or accessories, I laid down my white linen tablecloth. It’s simple, it’s classic, and it instantly makes any table feel special.
There’s just something about white linen that feels fresh and elegant, don’t you think?
Quick tip: If your tablecloth has deep creases from storage, try my go-to trick ~ lightly mist it with water using a spray bottle, then gently pull the folds out. It’s an easy shortcut when you don’t feel like ironing (which is… most of the time for me, haha!).
From there, I added a layer of texture with my rattan chargers.
I love how they warm things up a bit and bring in that natural, earthy feel. They’re one of those pieces that go with almost anything—such a good staple to have on hand.
Next came my tried-and-true white dinner plates.
I found them at an estate sale and they’ve become one of my favorite scores.
White dishes are like the little black dress of tablescapes—they work for every occasion and give you the freedom to play with color and detail everywhere else on the table.
I wanted to bring in a little shine. My gold flatware did the trick. It’s just enough sparkle to elevate the table without feeling over-the-top.
So with just these few pieces—a crisp white tablecloth, rattan chargers, white plates, and gold flatware—I had the perfect neutral base to build on.
Everything else was just layering on personality from there!
Mid-Century Modern Table Setting: Sleek & Geometric
Place Settings ~ It All Started with the Glasses
My mid-century modern table setting began with a set of thrifted teal and gold glasses that I instantly fell in love with.
The geometric lines and shiny accents?
Total perfection.
And for $2 each, they basically leapt into my cart.

At each place setting, I placed one of the glasses just above the knife and spoon.
Then, to pull in the teal from the glasses, I found a set of teal napkins at HomeGoods that paired perfectly.
I kept the napkin fold simple and clean—just a neat rectangle—because that minimal style is what mid-century modern is all about.
To complete the place settings, I layered a gold salad plate (another thrifting score!) on top of the dinner plate.

The salad plates totally pulled the gold from flatware and glasses together to create a cohesive place setting.
Building the Mid-Century Centerpiece
In the center of the table, I added two gold pillar candle holders and topped them with teal candles (from Target) that echo the color of the napkins and glasses.
And their fun shape was the perfect mid-century style! Chunky and geometric!!

But I didn’t just plop the candles on ~ I surrounded them with small white pebbles to ground the look and give it a more intentional, finished feel.
Then between the candle holders, I added a simple, cylindrical gold vase from Target that I filled with bold, geometric flowers from Trader Joe’s.
The flowers totally reminded me of that classic mid-century starburst design.

Bonus touch: If you’ve seen my mid-century side table DIY, I used that piece on the sideboard to help tie the look together. I’ll link it below in case you want to check it out!

Old World Charm Table Setting: Warm & Romantic
Same Foundation ~ Totally Different Vibe
Now let’s switch gears.
For this old world charm table setting, I swapped out just a few key pieces to completely change the vibe.
First up: the salad plates.
I replace the gold ones with my Nova Deruta plates that feel like they were plucked straight from a European café.

The teal in the napkins helps bring out the teal accent color in the plate design, which made me so happy.
Then I added a super easy DIY touch—handmade napkin rings made from wired hemp, a cardboard tube, and a little patience.

They’re so easy!
Just wrap the wire around a tube about five times, snip the ends, and slide it onto your napkin.
Boom ~ custom napkin rings that feel rustic and refined.
Elegant Touches with Vintage Flair
Instead of the MCM glasses, I went with some estate-sale goblets that have a lovely old-world shape and style to them.
Talk about transforming the look of the place settings!
For the centerpiece, I echoed the layout from the first table ~ two candlesticks and a central flower arrangement.
But for this one ~ a more vintage old-world twist.

I opted for short floral candle holders (instead of the gold geometric ones) and used my copper scuttle (another estate sale find!) as the vase.

Filled the scuttle with lilies and roses, and WOW ~ it totally brought the look together.

Hosting tip: I always remove tall florals before you sit down to eat. You don’t want anything blocking eye contact or conversation, especially on a day like Mother’s Day.
Final Touches & Your Vote
I had such a blast pulling together these two very different Mother’s Day tablescapes using the same base elements.
It just goes to show how much personality you can bring to the table ~ literally, with just a few thoughtful swaps.
