Let’s get clinking!
Right Way to Place Drinking Glasses on the Table
When it comes to setting the table, proper placement of drinking glasses is crucial for both aesthetics and practicality.
Traditionally, drinking glasses are placed on the upper right side of the dinner plate.
Types of Drinking Glasses and Their Placement
Below are the four most common glasses. I list each one and the right way to place drinking glasses on your tablescape.

1. Where the Water Glass Goes
This one’s a no-brainer. Every table needs a water glass, no matter the occasion.
The water glass is typically the largest drinking glass.
Its place? Just above the knife and plate, slightly tucked in.
Easy peasy!
2. Red Wine Glass Placement
The red wine glass, with its generous bowl, sits next to the water glass, but slightly below and to the right.
Think of it as the water glass’s charming sidekick.

3. Correct Place for the White Wine Glass
The order should be from right to left based on the type of wine being served – white wine, then red wine.
Following the pattern, the white wine glass takes its place below the red wine glass, and of course, to the right.
The wine glasses should form a diagonal line with the water glass, with the wine glasses’ rims pointing towards the water glass.
4. Where to Set Your Champagne Glass
If you’re serving bubbly, the champagne flute (or coupe) comes in last.
Since it’s usually enjoyed with dessert, it gets the top billing position, placed above the red and white wine glasses.

Short on Space? No Problem!
Sometimes, table space is a precious commodity.
In that case, ditch the straight line and go for a diamond formation!
Simply move the red wine glass up and the white wine glass in, creating that diamond shape. The white wine glass, closer to you, is still the first one you’ll reach for.
Remember: It’s Your Table!
So, there you have it!
The next time you set the table, you’ll be a pro at placing those drinking glasses.
While these are handy tips, there are no table setting police! Feel free to get creative and arrange your glasses in a way that works for you and your table.
Cheers to a beautifully adorned table (and maybe a delicious drink or two)!
