I created this easy ice cream party hanging decoration diy project because I wanted my white wall to scream – ice cream!
Lol!!
Actually, I was having an ice cream sundae buffet and I wanted more decor, than what would be on the buffet table. Plus I had a white wall with nothing on it ~ perfect for a diy hanging party decoration.
I also wanted the wall to have color and grab my guests’ attention. You get that, don’t you?
So, creating a diy ice cream cone backdrop sounded like a great idea.
And it was – plus, it was SUPER EASY and cheap to make.
Gotta love that!

How to Make Ice Cream Party Hanging Decoration DIY
Step 1: Make the ice cream cones for the diy hanging decoration
To make the ice cream cones for the diy ice cream cone backdrop, first print out the ice cream cone template.

Then cut out the ice cream scoop and cone sections.
Now trace those templates onto the backs of your selected cardstock.
I used corrugated cardboard for my cones. I really loved the texture it had, and the color of the cardboard was perfect.
For the ice cream scoops, I used a variety of patterned cardstock that all coordinated. Making a total of 15 cones and scoops.

After you have all of the cones and scoops cut out, it’s time to glue them together.

Place the cone on the back of the scoop, so the drips appear to go over the cone.

Continue to glue the ice cream scoops to the cones until they’re all attached.

Step 2: Make the tulle puffs for your ice cream party hanging decor
For this hanging party decoration diy, I made easy tulle puffs (or pom poms).

To make the tulle pom poms, you will want strips that are approximately 36″ long x 3″ wide. If you are using tulle from Dollar Tree, just cut the tulle in half widthwise, so you have two 3″ lengths.

Before cutting the long pieces, cut a piece 6″ long and then cut 1/2″ wide strips from it.

Then cut the remaining tulle into 36″ long pieces.

Next, wrap one length of tulle around your hand.

Take one of the 6″ x 1/2″ strips and tie it around the open middle section. You want the folded sections on the top and bottom.

Now take your scissors and guide it through the middle of one of the folded sections. Cut. And do the same on the other end.

To create the diy tulle pom pom, gently separate each cut piece and pull it toward the middle of the puff.

Do this with each side, and you will see the diy tulle puff forming.

Don’t cut the tie ends! Leave them hanging.
Continue making diy tulle pom poms until you have at least 6 completed puffs.
Step 3: Assembling the DIY ice cream party hanging decoration
To assemble your easy ice cream hanging decoration, first cut five 60″ lengths of twine.
Tie one end of each piece of twine to a long wooden dowel, spacing them equal distance apart.

*Tip: before attaching the ice cream cones and pom poms to the twine, layout how you want them to look.
Then, starting at about three inches from the wooden dowel, using the tie strips, tie a diy tulle pom pom to the twine.

Three inches down from the tulle puff, tape an ice cream cone. And three inches from the bottom of the cone, tie another diy tulle puff.

Continue alternating to achieve your desired look.

Then on the next hanging twine piece, start with an ice cream cone, followed by a pom pom. And continue alternating again.

Repeat this process for the remaining lengths of twine.

Step 4: Hanging the diy party wall backdrop
To hang your diy ice cream cone backdrop, I suggest using clear command hooks. They will hold the wooden dowel and blend into your wall.

Plus you can remove them when your party’s over.

Place the clear hooks at the appropriate height for your diy wall decor, and space them about 6″ from the ends of the dowel.
Now hang your easy ice cream party hanging decoration DIY project and pat yourself on the back for making such a cute backdrop.
