I’m not a fan of spiders, especially black furry ones. But at Halloween, I’m okay with the fake spiders. Especially these diy pom-pom spiders.
I mean….they’re spiders made using pom poms and pipe cleaners. Both of those items bring me back to my childhood, so they can’t be that creepy, right?
Plus, pom-poms are fun, fluffy balls. Ya gotta love them!
And then to make a creepy spider using a pom-pom, it definitely lessens the “ick” factor.
Not only are these diy pom pom spiders cute, but they are also super easy to make.
Like SUPER easy to make.
Especially if you use Clover’s pom-pom maker. (which I LOVE!!) Making pom poms with it is a breeze!
Take a look at the step-by-step instructions below and see how simple they are to make. Then start putting them around your house as part of your Halloween decorations.
Or even use the easy diy spiders as part of your Halloween table’s centerpiece. I used them as part of my Halloween tablescape. They were crawling around the table setting.
Yuck!

How to Make a Spider Out of Pipe Cleaners: Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Make the first side of the diy spider pom pom
I LOVE using my Clover pom-pom makers! They come in a variety of sizes, so you can make tiny to jumbo pom poms. And they make it SUPER easy to create a pom-pom!
First, open up one end of the pom pom maker’s set of arches. Then take an end of the fuzzy black yarn and hold it on the side of the pom-pom maker (see the image below).

While holding the end with one hand, use your other hand to thread the yarn through the middle of the arch and then wrap the yarn around the pom-pom maker arch.
Don’t wrap the yarn around the flat edges of the arch.
Wrap the yarn so that it covers the arches evenly. Careful you don’t overwrap, as it won’t close.

Close the side once it is evenly wrapped and then open the other side.
Step 2: Add the pipe cleaners for the fake spider’s legs
Take four black pipe cleaners and twist them together in the middle.

Then feed the pipe cleaners through the middle opening of the Clover pom-pom maker.

Now wrap the other side of the pom pom maker with yarn until it is completely covered.

Close the pom-pom maker.
Step 3: Completing the pom pom spider
Take a sharp pair of scissors and cut in the middle groove of the u-shaped arches. Cut all the way around the maker, being careful to NOT cut the pipe cleaners.

*Note: you might need to hold down on the ends of the arches to keep the spider pom-pom maker from opening.
Don’t open the maker yet!!
Cut off an 8-inch piece of yarn. Pull the yarn piece on opposite sides of the pipe cleaners, between the two u-shaped arches that you just cut the yarn. Tie the yarn in a knot and pull tight. Tie a second knot.

Carefully open the pom-pom maker, one arch at a time. There might be a piece of yarn that wasn’t originally cut, so cut it now, before completely opening the maker.

Once both sides of the arches are open, you can pull the Clover pom pom maker apart.

You now have a completed pom-pom with pipe cleaners attached.

Step 4: Making the pipe cleaners and pom pom look like a spider
Trim the pom pom yarn so that it is uniform and makes a nice ball.

Be careful to not cut the pipe cleaners.

Now shape the pipe cleaners to look like a spider’s legs. Push them slightly apart in the middle and bend the pipe cleaners to look like leg joints.

I added a small red hourglass to my diy spider, so it would resemble a Black Widow.
OMG! These DIY pom-pom spiders are too stinking cute and easy to make. Wanna see them in action? Check them out on my creepy Halloween table setting.
