I’m SO excited to share a fun and colorful Mother’s Day table setting idea with you!
I recently did a poll on my YouTube channel, and 60% said they plan to have a sit-down meal where the dishes are passed around the table.
Knowing that space for food is essential, I came up with a simple, easy-to-move centerpiece for Mother’s Day and focused on making the place settings the star of the show.

If you’re looking for a way to add style without sacrificing space, you’re in the right place!

How to Style a Colorful Mother’s Day Table Setting
The Base: Fun Floral Placemats
When designing a tablescape, I always like to start with a strong foundation.
I wanted something colorful with wonderful patterns for this pretty Mother’s Day table setting, so I headed to HomeGoods and found the perfect floral placemats.
These vibrant placemats immediately set the tone for the whole table.
The floral patterns is a mix of vibrant colors with a subtle blue and white striped ruffle edge.

These placemats are doing double duty – they’re colorful and they’re mixing patterns, which is exactly what I wanted for this tablescape.
Don’t the bright colors and playful patterns make you smile?
Mixing and Matching Plates and Patterns
For the place settings, I wanted to play with different patterns while keeping everything cohesive.
The secret to mixing patterns is to vary the sizes and styles of the prints.
It’s all about layering patterns with intention—each piece complements the others, creating a visually pleasing setup without being overwhelming.
The Dinner Plate
For the dinner plate, I chose a blue and white floral print.
The blue perfectly matches the border of the placemat, creating a cohesive look.

The plate’s floral pattern is more open and medium-sized compared to the tight pattern on the placemat, providing a nice contrast.

The Salad Plate
On top of the dinner plate, I added a green and white salad plate. This introduces another color and pattern to the mix.
The green complements the shades in the placemat beautifully.

Even though it’s another floral design, the difference in size and color makes it work.
Remember, when mixing patterns, vary the scale – here I’ve got small, medium, and large floral patterns working together harmoniously.
Choosing Flatware and Glassware
To keep the look fresh and cohesive, I opted for green-handled flatware, tying in the green from the salad plates and placemats.
It’s a small detail but one that makes a big difference in pulling everything together.
For the glassware, I found the most beautiful raspberry-colored glasses at a thrift store and paired them with blue tulip-shaped glasses I recently snagged at an estate sale (at 50 cents each!).
Estate sales are goldmines for unique finds like this, and I love how the colors match perfectly with the rest of the Mother’s Day table setting.
The Napkins and Napkin Rings
I wanted the napkins to echo the floral theme, so I used these adorable flower-shaped napkin rings, also from an estate sale.
The napkins themselves are a raspberry color, matching the glasses.

The fun part was folding the napkins to resemble leaves, which really enhanced the floral theme. It’s such a cute and easy detail that adds depth and character to each place setting.

The Easy, Movable Centerpiece
Since the plan is focusing on passing food around, you don’t want a big, heavy centerpiece taking up space. Instead, I created a simple bouquet in a colorful vase.
The colors tied in beautifully with the placemats, plates, and glasses.
The best part?
When guests arrive, you can easily move the vase to make room for the food.
