Styling a pretty tablescape for a dinner party can be daunting and scary.
Don’t fear!
I’ve got you covered.

I’m gonna share with you a simple yet stylish table setting idea that’s perfect for a relaxed gathering.
One that you can easily (that’s the key word) copy.
Let’s get started!
How to Create a Stunning Casual Dinner Party Table Setting
Foundation: The Base of Your Table Setting
The first thing to consider is the foundation for your casual tablescape. The foundation is crucial in setting the overall tone and atmosphere.
Will you use a tablecloth, table runner, placemats, or charger plates?
For a casual dinner party, I prefer to skip the tablecloth and opt for placemats to create a more relaxed vibe.
I love using woven placemats because they add a touch of texture and warmth to the table.
Plates and Glasses
Next, I added a dinner plate in the center of each placemat.
For a casual look, I chose simple, white plates. These classic plates provide a clean and timeless backdrop for the other elements on the table.
Then to the right of the plates, I placed a water and a wine glass.

*Hint: the water glass goes above and to the left of the wine glass.
I think it’s important to have two different glasses at each place setting to accommodate different beverages: one for water and a secondary glass for another beverage.
Flatware
For the flatware, I laid the knife and fork on the top right of each plate. This is a bit different from the traditional setting, but I think it adds to the casual and relaxed feel of the table.
By placing the flatware in this way, you’re creating a more informal and inviting atmosphere that encourages your guests to relax and enjoy themselves.
Napkins
To add a touch of polish, I used cloth napkins instead of paper. (You don’t want your dinner party to be too casual, lol!)
Plus, cloth napkins elevate the dining experience and can be reused.

I chose patterned napkins that complement the other colors on the table.
I also created a cute napkin fold and attached a hanging tag that I used as a place card for a personalized touch that makes my guests feel special.
A Casual Tablescape Centerpiece
For the centerpiece, I kept it simple with a low-lying vase of flowers and some small candles.
A low centerpiece ensures that your guests can see each other across the table and encourages conversations among everyone.

(Don’t you hate dodging large centerpieces, just to try and talk to someone across the table!)

A simple centerpiece also allows the other elements on the table to shine without being overshadowed.
The candles provide a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the flowers add a touch of natural beauty.
Final Thoughts When Creating a Casual Dinner Party Table Setting
- Keep it casual: This is a casual dinner party, so don’t stress about perfection. The goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for your guests.
- Choose colors that complement each other: Create a cohesive look by selecting colors that work well together. A color palette that is too busy or chaotic can be overwhelming, so it’s important to choose colors that complement each other and create a harmonious aesthetic.
- Add personal touches: Incorporate elements that reflect your personality and style. This could be anything from a favorite piece of china to a unique table runner. Personal touches make the table setting feel special and inviting.

By following these tips, you can easily create a beautiful and inviting table setting for your next casual dinner party.
